What is the Annual Fund?

The mainstay of the Academy’s fundraising program, the Annual Fund is a critical part of Hampton Roads Academy’s operating budget each year. Gifts to the Annual Fund make an immediate impact on every aspect of the education
experience, from library books to laboratory equipment and athletic uniforms. Your support enables HRA to attract the best faculty and students and to offer them the finest academic resources and learning environment. In other words, the Annual Fund is the “hidden scholarship” for every HRA student because it closes the gap between tuition and the actual cost to educate each student at HRA.

Knowing how your gift will make a difference is important. That is why we are introducing the Points of the Compass Funds. The Compass Funds provide you with the option to direct gifts to personal areas of interest that support essential elements of the HRA program. Your gift to any Compass Fund will help to ensure excellence in every component of the HRA experience.

A letter requesting Annual Fund contributions will be mailed to you. It is through the Annual Fund that we are able to raise the quality of our educational program from the ordinary to the extraordinary. Please consider making a contribution to the Annual Fund.

Points of the Compass:

Area of Greatest Need

Your support of an annual gift each and every year is very gratefully received. Your philanthropic support makes it
possible for HRA to ensure that we achieve excellence in important ways:

• Superior academic performance inspired and guided by a talented and caring faculty.
• A personal “whole child” approach with small classes and individual attention.
• A full range of opportunities that includes academics, athletics, community service and more.
• A climate of high expectations and shared goals in a diverse community.

Many families value the overall HRA experience. That support is difficult to categorize. If your desire is to demonstrate your financial support with a generous unrestricted annual fund gift to the school, we promise to use it in a budgeted area where there is the greatest need. Thank you for your continued confidence and investment in the experience that is HRA.

Athletic Fund

Interscholastic athletic competition is a time-honored tradition at HRA. We recognize the need to balance academics and athletics, and we understand the role they perform collectively in the development of each individual. HRA students know that leadership and success are not measured only by wins. By participating in team sports, students develop life skills such as honesty, cooperation, dependability and perseverance. Highlighted needs for 2007/2008:

• Athletic Fields Enhancement - to include new infield turf, top treatment and irrigation capability for the new
baseball field. Also included are surface improvements for all the athletic fields, including the softball, football
and lacrosse fields, plus the field hockey and soccer fields.

The Athletic Fund provides support for sports at HRA including equipment and programs, team uniforms, field maintenance and training opportunities for the coaches.

Faculty Fund

The opportunity to learn from extraordinary teachers is made possible through the support of the Faculty Fund.
Contributions help strengthen faculty compensation and provide HRA with the means to attract and retain outstanding faculty. Your generous support of the Faculty Fund creates opportunities for HRA students that will shape the course of their futures. Highlighted needs for 2007/2008:

• To support travel for the college advisors to expand the vision of the program and to allow them to grow in their profession.

The Faculty Fund supports and promotes excellence in teaching.

Fine Arts Fund

The cornerstone of Fine Arts at HRA is the belief that the arts teach important life skills that promote emotional well-being, self discovery and an understanding of the community and the world. HRA believes an artist resides within each one of us. Therefore, we encourage all students to pursue their study of the arts. In our fine arts programs, effort, creativity and originality are considered equally important aspects of achievement. Highlighted needs for 2007/2008:

• Enhancements to sound and lighting capabilities to better showcase the talents of current and future HRA
performers, including a wireless audio system in the Svein Lassen Theater.

The Fine Arts Fund supports the visual arts, productions, costume and set design, musical instruments, visiting artists and community partnerships.

Library & Technology Fund

State-of-the-art technology enhances learning for all students and faculty. New technologies on campus include curriculum-based software, interactive displays, video production, desktop publishing, subscription databases, and various other on-line library resources. The school’s library has a growing collection of 12,000 books and audio-visual resources available for student, parent and faculty use; providing high-quality learning materials. Highlighted needs for 2007/2008:

• Projection carts with 100-inch classroom screens for Science, Math, English, Foreign Language and History, Visual
and Performing Arts and Physical Education.

The Library and Technology Fund provides funding for the library and for computer network maintenance and upgrades plus technology support for the classroom.

Scholarship Fund

Hampton Roads Academy endeavors to support students who have documented financial need. The Scholarship Fund provides support to HRA families whose students might not otherwise have the means to attend HRA. For many this is the opportunity of a lifetime. Their talents, interests and backgrounds enrich the school life, creating opportunities for all students to grow and learn from each other. Highlighted needs for 2007/2008:

• Funding for full and partial annual scholarships to enable qualified students to benefit from the HRA experience.

The Scholarship Fund provides annual financial support to HRA students with demonstrated need.

Why is my gift important?

The strength of HRA today has come as a direct result of over forty years of generous contributions. This support has brought HRA to its present position, providing the very best in college preparatory education. This strong tradition of support for the school’s Annual Fund has been vital in past years and is even more important to the school’s present and future programs. Only through continued support this year and for many years to come will HRA maintain and strengthen its educational leadership and excellence.
