Admission Processes & Procedures for Grades 6-12

Application Form: Parents or legal guardians must complete and submit the application form and non-refundable fee of $75.00. An optional photograph of the applicant may be attached to the form.

Student Application: The student must complete this form in his or her own handwriting. (Typed forms will not be accepted.)

School Records/ Transcripts: Parents must sign and date the Record Release form and deliver, either by mail or in person, to the principal’s/head’s office of the student's current school. Request that the school forward the official copy directly to the HRA Admissions Office as soon as possible. Please inform the school that Hampton Roads Academy will require the year-end report card in June.

Recommendations: It is the responsibility of the parent to distribute two (2) recommendation forms to the appropriate teachers and request that the forms be sent directly to the HRA Admissions Office. An optional recommendation form may be submitted as a third recommendation.

It is recommended that you contact each teacher individually and that you provide the teacher with the enclosed return envelope. If your child is in a self-contained classroom, the second recommendation can come from a previous year's teacher or from an auxillary teacher, such as music, art, PE, etc.

Admissions Testing: Each applicant is required to take admissions tests. HRA administers three standardized tests and a writing sample.

School Visit: Prospective applicants must spend all or part of a school day at HRA. Prospective applicants will be paired with a student ambassador for the day. Also, each student will be interviewed by a school administrator.

Admissions: No student will be considered for admission until transcripts, teacher recommendations and admission testing results are received and completed, and the student has visited HRA. The Admissions Committee reviews all completed files. Early admission application files must be completed by the first week in December. You will be notified by mail at the end of December. All other applicants will be notified accordingly.

Placement: Admitted students may be required to take placement tests in mathematics and/or English. These students will be notified of testing dates, if applicable.

Immunization and Physical Examination Requirements for Enrollment: Documented proof of having received the doses of diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, and chickenpox vaccines required by the Commonwealth of Virginia must be submitted to the school nurse before enrollment in Hampton Roads Academy.
