HRA One-Act Festival continues Friday and Saturday

Hampton Roads Academy’s eighth annual One- Act Play Festival opened Thursday evening, continues Friday and Saturday and celebrates three unique, short, one-act plays featuring HRA Upper School students and HRA faculty members. The One-Act Festival will be presented in Black Box format in HRA’s Svein J. Lassen Auditorium.
Interrupting Vanessa by Colleen Neuman, directed by HRA third grade teacher, Kate Goddin, features a young girl who keeps her imagination alive by using a “pile of junk” in her room to make up stories. She also keeps the memory of her Dad alive, by imagining he is sitting on her bed, reading the newspaper. When her mom invites an awkward classmate over to play, Vanessa is mortified, but soon discovers some truths about growing up.

The Tail That Wagged The Dog by Tim Kelly, directed by HRA Headmaster, Peter Mertz, follows “The Waltz King” Johann Strauss on a visit to Boston during a worldwide tour when his valet secretly sells locks of his hair to adoring fans, pocketing the money for his own vanity. The deception weaves its way through his shrewish wife and determined fans in this delightful comedy starring HRA faculty.

Builder by Alan Haehnel, directed by HRA Theatre Technical Director, John Nichols, features a builder emerging from the rubble and does what seems natural… builds. While the other characters criticize and dictate, they seem oblivious to the fate that awaits them.
