Middle School History
Curriculum
The history curriculum seeks to develop informed
citizens who develop an appreciation and understanding for events
both past and present. The skills necessary to gain this knowledge
are introduced in the middle school and consistently reinforced
in every future course. Students learn how to effectively read texts
and primary sources, efficiently take notes, conduct oral presentations,
and employ maps, tables, and charts. Students at all levels will
also make use of technology in the classroom to enhance the social
studies curriculum.
The courses in the middle school provide students a strong foundation
in the social studies field. Each course creates a solid background
on which future classes will build on to cohesively transition the
student to future academic pursuits. Sixth grade students take Ancient
Civilizations to discover how these societies contributed to our
development. Students explore topics that range from the Fertile
Crescent in Mesopotamia to life in the Middle Ages. In the seventh
grade, students investigate how geography influences society and
history in World Geography. In a time when nations and societies
grow more interdependent each day, a thorough understanding of the
world is imperative. Students conclude their middle school social
studies curriculum with American Studies in the eighth grade. This
survey course traces America’s development from early European
exploration to World War II.
