Amnesty International
Jennifer Tarbox, Sponsor - The student arm of an international organization, this group seeks to promote human rights legislation and compliance. Activities might include letter writing to governments and information sessions on human rights violations.

Cum Laude Society
Karen Gillespie, Sponsor- Cum Laude recognizes superior scholarship among public and private secondary schools. To be considered for induction, students must be in the top 20% of their senior class, or the top 10% of their junior class. Only a limited number of students can be inducted each year.

Discipline Committee
Aaron T. Hill, Sponsor- The Upper School Discipline Committee is a body of elected students and selected faculty who are convened only at the request of the administration or as an “appeals” committee for an administrative discipline decision. Requests for student review are typically concerned with issues outside the purview of the Honor Council, but not always, and usually require an administrative response to increasingly inappropriate student behavior.

Environmental Club
Becky Deeley, Sponsor- Members increase awareness and appreciation for ecological and environmental issues. Conservation and preservation are emphasized through community service projects, such as oyster reef restoration.

French Club
Elaine McDermott, Sponsor- Members increase awareness of the French culture and language by sponsoring monthly activities, guest speakers, films, field trips, etc.

Gay/Straight Alliance
Alison Lee and Mark Schindler, Sponsors - The HRA Gay/Straight Alliance is a safe environment for all students in the school community to discuss the identity issues facing today's youth. Through open-minded conversations and activities, the GSA provides a space for students to express themselves and learn about others.

Honor Council
Susanne Swain, Sponsor- Students in grades 9-12 elect a class representative to serve on the honor council. Students may also be appointed by the administration. The operation of the Honor Council is described in the Student Handbook.

Key Club
Alison Lee, Sponsor - Students are provided with a forum for community service. Members are responsible for one community service project each quarter.

Latin Club
Dr. Alice Rubinstein, Sponsor- The club’s purpose is to promote the study and enjoyment of Latin at HRA.

Model U.N.
Susan Jones, Sponsor- The goal of the Model U.N. is to provide an enriching experience that will promote a thorough understanding of the ideals of international unity and to broaden students’ perspective toward international issues. The goal shall be attained through participation in the North American Invitational Model UN sponsored by Georgetown University.

Mu Alpha Theta
Membership in this mathematics honor society is determined by the Math Department.

Multicultural Club
Dr. Alice Rubinstein, Sponsor- Membership is open to students in grades 8-12. Weekly discussion meetings are held. There are guest speakers and lunches featuring different cuisines. The Club also participates in programs with students from other area independent schools and sends students to the National Leadership Conference at William and Mary every Spring.

Odyssey of the Mind
Jennifer Tarbox, Sponsor- Teams work together to solve problems creatively. Projects are selected from a prescribed list. Teams from area schools compete and may advance through regional, state and world levels.

Operation Smile
Heather O'Toole, Sponsor - HRA's Operation Smile Club supports the non-profit organization out of Norfolk by the same name. The organization's goal is to provide free reconstructive surgeries to children in developing nations. The HRA chapter sponsors a talent show and various other fundraisers to support OPSmile mission teams to such locations as Vietnam and Cambodia.

Prefects
Prefects are students selected by the faculty to serve as mentors to new upper school students. The administration will also ask these students to provide assistance or to assume leadership for special events.

Literary Magazine
Christine Contakes, Sponsor- HRA’s literary magazine Sheets and Lines is an impressive collection of student writing and art. It is published annually. Teachers may recommend to students that their work be submitted for publication.

Spanish Club
Alison Lee, Sponsor- The Spanish Club provides a fun environment for learning about the Spanish culture and language.

SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)
Aaron Hill, Sponsor- The goal of HRA’s SADD chapter is to raise students’ awareness of destructive forces that may adversely affect their lives. Members reach that goal through education, personal example, and sponsoring fun drug-free and alcohol-free activities, such as dances and the after-prom party.

Student Council (SCA)
Mr. Aaron Hill, Sponsor- In the spring, the student body conducts elections for the officers of student government and each class conducts elections for class officers.

Theatre Productions

Varsity Club
Karen Gillespie, Sponsor- Student athletes may apply to this athletic honor organization if they ave earned three varsity letters in a sport or four varsity letters in different sports while maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

Yearbook
Cory MacLaughlin, Sponsor - Students working on the Yearbook participate in a graded class in which they earn one full elective credit.
