ATHLETICS

Athletic Hall of Fame

The Hampton Roads Academy Athletic Hall of Fame award was established in winter of 2015 to recognize an individual or individuals of HRA whose accomplishments have brought pride and distinction to HRA athletics. It should serve to inspire our current students to achieve greatness in athletics while embodying the HRA core values.

Athletes and teams will be eligible for nomination at any time beginning 10 years after they have graduated from HRA. Current coaches and administrators are eligible after direct affiliation with the athletic program has ended. Exceptions may be made by unanimous vote by the selection committee.

2018 Athletic Hall of Fame Honorees

Hampton Roads Academy inducts new classes to the Athletic Hall of Fame. The 2018 event was held on Saturday, October 13, in the Charles R. Spencer Jr. gym lobby. Friends and families of honorees gathered for the official induction into the Hall of Fame.

David Horne '68 had the honor of introducing his friend, classmate and teammate, Robert "Bobby" Harris III '68, being inducted for his overall athletic successes at HRA. Bobby played Football, Basketball, Baseball, Cross Country and was also one of the first players on the HRA Golf team. He received many all conference awards in Football and Basketball and then went on to play Varsity Soccer at Hampden-Sydney College.

Former Coach Barbara Schmidt, along with a letter from Coach Jim Carlone, introduced members of the 1995 Girls Swim team and recalled their exciting year, winning HRA’s first Virginia State Swimming Championship, and proving that HRA is the team to beat in Virginia.

Those present included Erin Bell '99, Kathryn Hill Hall '99, Emily Hoard '96, Dena Heath Kota '99, Haas Shaner Nye '98, Emily Shiver Moses '98, and Lori Weaver '00.

Absent were Elizabeth Brinker '97, Jennifer Howard Camp '96, Sarah Coenen Suettinger '98, Sarah Stolldorf '98, Caroline Griffith Edwards '97, Sarah Fisher '96, Natalie Griffith Meyer '00, Caroline Daimler Jobe '97, Halle Harris Kern '99, Sarah Curbow Lanigan '96, Lauren Hoard Lansing '99, Megan Madaras '99, Asuka Nemoto '98, Tiffany Patrick '96, and Abigail Williamson '97.

Friend, classmate and teammate, Tasha Rose '98 was pleased to introduce inductee Ashley Meeker '98, being recognized for her talents in Soccer at both HRA and UVA. Unfortunately, Ashley was not able to attend, but her parents, David and Rebecca Meeker, were there to share words from Ashley and accept the award on her behalf. She received the title of MVP and TCIS Player of the Year in high school and in college, she was a Letter-winner during her entire UVA career. Her team made the NCAA tournament all four years and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2001.

Their plaques now hang in Alumni Hall at HRA.
