After School Programs

Extending Your Day at HRA

Just because the school day ends in the early afternoon doesn’t mean that the work days ends for our Hampton Roads Academy parents. Plus, when it comes to educating the whole child, sometimes you need a few more hours in the day to fit in the extras – ballet and art, running club and chess.

That’s why Hampton Roads Academy is pleased to offer after-school programming for Lower and Middle School students.

After-school programming, which is open to Hampton Roads Academy students only, includes Extended Care, After School Classes, Special Day Programs and Middle School Study Hall.

List of 5 items.

  • After School Classes

A wide selection of After School Classes are available for lower school students and include, among other activities, ballet, strings, and running club.

Sign up forms for these classes are sent home during the summer before each school year begins, throughout the year as new classes are added and at the start of each semester.
  • Extended Care

Extended Care is available Monday through Thursday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Fridays from 2:10 to 5:30 p.m.

Students staying after school start the afternoon with a snack before the first through fourth graders start their homework time.

The Extended Care after-school team is largely made up of students from nearby Christopher Newport University (CNU). During designated homework time, the CNU students work with the Hampton Roads Academy students, helping them with questions they may have about assignments or how to work through different tasks.

For busy families, many find it helpful for their Hampton Roads Academy student to have all their homework done before getting home, freeing the time at home for family activities.
After homework, the lower school students get the opportunity to play outside. After outdoor play, and on bad weather days, the after-school team sets up fun learning centers inside the Multi-Purpose Room. On some days, the students watch a movie. Some students choose to spend time reading books.
  • Middle School Study Hall

For Middle School students, the after-school program is a Study Hall. Students sign in and note what assignments they will be working on during Study Hall. Teachers are available for assistance during this time, which is especially useful for middle school athletes  before and after games and practices.
  • Special Day Programs

On holidays and teacher work days when the students are off of school, Special Day Programs are available. Students can enroll for the day in Extended Care and do activities at the school or sign up for special programs. Special programs are often like field trips for the students, taking them to activity centers like bowling or rock climbing.

Students receive Special Day Program sign up forms from the Hampton Roads Academy team prior to the school closure days.
  • Summer Camps

The same team that offers the Hampton Roads Academy students after school programs also designs and hosts the summer camps on campus, which are open to the entire community. Click here  to learn more about the Hampton Roads Academy Summer Camp programs.
