Why do you care about HRA?

It wasn’t until I got to HRA, and under the influence of Kitty Booth that I realized that I was smart and I could do the work asked of me. So, in essence HRA believed in me and in turn I began to believe in myself.

My wife and I truly believe that our son is not only getting a great education at HRA, but will also be prepared to become a competent young adult when he graduates.

Our kids love going to school each day and have since the day they started at HRA. It is a place that fosters that love of learning and sense of independence that we want for our kids.

I care about HRA because I have entrusted my children’s academic, social and athletic development to the school and its educational philosophy.

Hampton Roads Academy enabled me to live up to that challenge and gave me the tools with which I navigate the intellectual world around me

What is your favorite aspect of HRA?

Small classes. Faculty support. Faculty who are flexible with their time to meet with you to either help you understand the material, or offer their time to talk about their subject expertise, sports, the weather…the faculty are accessible. As a student you can expand yourself beyond your comfort zone and as a result can be an athlete and involved in music, theater and/or the arts.  You aren’t put in a box and made to stay there.  The honor code.  It isn’t just a bunch of words on a page. It has weight and means something.

I love walking into school at the same time as students because I know that nine times out of 10, some student is going to hold the door open for me. I also adore the fact that people smile and speak to each other at HRA - from teachers, to students, custodial staff, administrators and bus drivers.  Our bus driver in Williamsburg knows what sports our kids play and takes such an interest in them and helps start their day off right!

I think that HRA provides the best academic education to children in this area.

One of the main advantages at HRA for my family has been the ECE (after-school programs). My wife and I are both working full-time physicians, and almost never able to pick our kids up from school at the conclusion of class. The ECE programs are diverse and allow my kids quality exposure to violin, chess, ballet, yoga, art, karate and chorus all on the campus at HRA. Our kids are having fun after school, such that when we come to pick them up, they don't want to leave!
