A Supportive Community

Hampton Roads Academy started, and has grown over the years, thanks to the generous support of alumni, parents, friends of the school and the community who share a dedication to cultivating an independent school that helps prepare young people for their next steps in life.
This tradition of giving is embedded deeply in our history. Gifts to HRA help preserve those traditions while also moving our school forward into our next half century.
As an independent school, HRA relies on this tradition of giving from parents, alumni, the community and friends of the school to help fulfill our mission  and provide support to students. Tuition alone does not cover the robust programming available for our students – tuition only covers approximately 90 percent of our operating budget, charitable gifts are a necessary part of HRA's healthy financial profile. And, unlike tuition, contributions to the Annual Fund can be 100 percent tax-deductible and allow each family to give at the level at which they are able.

Philanthropic gifts specifically support the people and programs that make HRA the great school that it is: talented teachers, small classes, enriching arts  and athletics  programs, library and instructional resources, technology  and much more.
Every gift, no matter what size, is meaningful to HRA and its students.

Funds generated from these gifts, large and small, help shape HRA’s academic programs, support outstanding teachers and enable talented, motivated students to attend the school.

Of note regarding IRA Rollovers, Congress has extended a tax break on charitable donations from individual donor's retirement accounts retroactively to January 1, 2014. This provision allows individuals 70 1/2 and older to donate up to $100,000 ($200,000 for a couple) in IRA assets to a qualified charitable organization such as Hampton Roads Academy. The IRA charitable rollover is tax-free and not included in a donor's adjusted gross income. Gifts also will qualify for the donor's 2014 required minimum distribution (RMD).

The window of opportunity on this retroactive extension is short so please contact your financial adviser soon about your IRA and RMD. If you decide to distribute a charitable gift from your IRA,to Hampton Roads Academy, ensure that your IRA's administrator transfers it directly from the IRA to HRA.
