Research Methods Course: Student Spotlight

Emily Helpinstill '23
Throughout my time as a student at Hampton Roads Academy I have been more focused
on the humanities than other subjects like math or science. That is not to say I have not been
interested in science, but the information I learned in biology and chemistry did not seem as fun
compared to my English or history classes. However, when I was signing up for classes for my
junior year, research methods sounded like the perfect class for me.
We do not need to memorize organ systems or solve for the half-life of an element like we needed to in biology and chemistry. Instead, we are able to learn laboratory techniques and skills taught in higher education. When I go off to college and eventually take laboratory science I will have the skills necessary not only
to succeed, but to excel and thrive. This class has been an excellent way to learn about topics and
techniques useful for classes beyond this one. Taking this class has provided me with a love for
science I did not know I had. Researching and analyzing scientific papers brings me more joy
than I thought it ever would, and I feel a thrill of excitement when a plate comes back with
growth. For my final research project I plan on testing how different energy drinks affect
flatworms, and how we can compare these results to the human body. When I head off to college
in a year I know I will be able to face scientific problems head on due to the information I have
learned in this class.
