Five Students Inducted to Cum Laude Society

Congratulations to these five students on being inducted into the Cum Laude Society: James Baust, Catherine Chang, Aanya Khayat, Aarman Khayat, and Silin Yi.
The Cum Laude Society, founded in 1906, has as its mission to honor academic achievement among juniors and seniors at member institutions for the purpose of promoting Areté (excellence), Diké (justice) and Timé (honor). According to the wishes of its founder, Dr. Abram W. Harris, only schools of superior academic quality can maintain a chapter of the Cum Laude Society. The HRA chapter was founded fifty-one years ago, in April of 1971. At present, only fifteen other schools in Virginia have been awarded Cum Laude Society charters.

Each chapter may elect not more than 20% of the graduating class who have demonstrated academic excellence in the college curriculum, choosing up to 10% at the end of Junior Year and the remainder in spring of the Senior Year. As the Society Motto stresses excellence, justice, and honor in the broadest sense, only students who have demonstrated good character, honor, and integrity in all aspects of their school life are elected to membership.

While the primary purpose of the Society is to honor students who have excelled in scholarship, faculty membership is provided to maintain and operate the chapter. Those selected are members of Phi Beta Kappa or of the Cum Laude Society
