HRA’s Athletic Hall of Fame

On October 17, 2015, Hampton Roads Academy inducted five new members into the school’s newly established Athletic Hall of Fame. Coach Walter Herman Hogg (deceased), current faculty member Thomas Yevak ’83, James Reid ‘89, Matthew Behncke ‘98 and the undefeated 1977 Varsity Football team became the first class inducted into the school’s newest athletic honor.

Families, friends, faculty and alumni attended the inaugural induction breakfast in support of the five honorees. The intimate event featured sentimental memorabilia from the honorees and heartfelt testimonials from students and coaches. During the ceremony, Hampton Roads Academy alumnus Allen Tanner ‘68 shared his experience with his former coach, Walter Herman Hogg.

“Herman Hogg was devoted to Hampton Roads Academy and its students while a teacher and coach at the school,” said Tanner. “He was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the athletic program and taught his students lessons beyond the classroom and playing fields.”

During his acceptance speech, honoree Jim Reid expressed his gratitude for the support he received during his athletic career. “You don't get an honor like this without a multitude of people that have helped you along the way- I have to give credit to my parents, my brothers, my teammates and all my teachers and coaches at HRA,” said Reid. “When people learn where I went to high school they sort of assume I made it to the NFL despite HRA, but I say I made it to the NFL, in part, because of HRA.”

Each honoree or representing family member received a formal picture frame with a biography that included highlights of the honoree’s athletic and academic career. The inductees are also featured on the new Athletic Hall of Fame wall inside the school. For a complete biography of each of the inductees and to see photos, click here.
