A look into HRA’s Senior Project Tradition

Pursuing independent study has been a tradition for Hampton Roads Academy students. While Senior Projects are a requirement for graduation, they also present an opportunity for students to learn about a subject that sparks their curiosity, passion or interest.  This year’s Senior Projects were wide-ranging. We will take a closer look a number of this year’s senior projects.
“It’s Great to be a Wall Flower: Healing in Art” by Cassandra King
About her project: For my senior project, I painted a mural on the walls of Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk. Part of my project also included researching color psychology. My research findings helped me pick colors for the mural that would have the most positive influence on patients, doctors and other staff members. I started my project in June and finished in April.

What was learned during the Senior Project experience: It was fascinating to discover how colors affect us physically and mentally, and I truly believe in the healing properties that art can evoke. I learned through my senior project that art therapy is a potential career path for me. Painting on a wall is also a lot more challenging than on a canvas.

Senior Project advice you would give to younger students: The biggest piece of advice I can give to younger students is to really take advantage of the opportunity at hand. Senior projects are one of the last times that you'll have someone to push and guide you through something so extraordinary. Definitely try to step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself, because you'd be amazed at what you can accomplish.
