HRA Graduates 65 in the Class of 2017

Hampton Roads Academy celebrated the accomplishments of 65 students during the 2017 Commencement Ceremony today in the school’s Svein J. Lassen Auditorium. The graduating students continue the tradition of 100 percent college acceptance and earned nearly $5 million in merit scholarships and awards.
The morning ceremony included commencement addresses from Director of Hampton Roads Academy’s Theater/Performing Arts/International Residency James Gandolfo, selected by the senior class to give the Salutation, and seniors Jack Teagle and Hunter Hickman, selected by their classmates to give the Student Commencement Speech. The Commencement Address was given by Molly M. Groom ’88, Deputy Chief Counsel, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Department of Homeland Security. After the Conferring of Diplomas, Headmaster Peter W. Mertz gave closing remarks.

“The Class of 2017 has accomplished many great things at Hampton Roads Academy. Through sharing their diverse talents they have made a lasting impact on our community. I’m proud in the knowledge that they will continue to learn, grow and put their talents to important use in all of their future endeavors.” said Peter W. Mertz, Headmaster.

The 65 members of the Class of 2017 leave a legacy of great success at Hampton Roads Academy in the classroom: five seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their high academic achievement; on the stage: the seniors led this year’s play productions and concerts; and on the athletic fields: seven graduates will play collegiate athletics on an NCAA team. Graduates plan to attend 43 different colleges or universities.
