Six Seniors Inducted into the Hampton Roads Academy Cum Laude Society

The Cum Laude Society honors superior academic achievement at select, mostly independent, schools; HRA is one of only 13 schools in Virginia to have been awarded a Cum Laude charter. Members represent the top 20 percent of their graduating class, and in a class of just over sixty students, this is a distinctive honor.

An afternoon induction ceremony on April 26, held in front of the upper school student body and invited guests, included a presentation of the new inductees by current members, as well as thoughtful remarks by Caitlyn Unsworth, a Cum Laude member from the class of 2011 and Columbia University graduate, who is currently doing graduate work at the University of Virginia. Caitlyn’s message to upper school students and guests was to not be afraid to pursue new paths in life, paths that one might not have planned. She was an all-state basketball player at HRA, played in college, and hoped to play professionally. When she found herself not enjoying her basketball experience at Columbia, and no longer wanted to continue pre-med studies, she realized that she really enjoyed her economics classes. After graduation, she worked for two years in New York City and is now pursuing her master’s degree at University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.
The ceremony was followed by a lunch reception for inductees and invited guests in HRA's Phillips Commons.
