Volunteer at HRA

The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.
Volunteering – providing service to others – is a core tenet taught to Hampton Roads Academy students. And that very giving of time and talent to the school is a key way for families and alumni to support HRA. 

Parents and Alumni are encouraged to get involved in the following ways:

  • Alumni: Serve as Alumni Council Member

    Alumni Council members attend three to four meetings a year, support the Annual Fund through a personal gift and by encouraging alumni support through classmates and friends, assists with Homecoming events and all-alumni reunions, organize the alumni soccer game, organize the alumni basketball game, and assist with school events. Contact Director of Alumni Relations Rachel Hirsch '13 for more information at (757) 884-9113.
  • Alumni: Serve as Class Agent

    Alumni Class Agents help promote friendship and connection to HRA among former classmates, support the Annual Fund through a personal gift and by encouraging alumni support through classmates and friends, attend meetings and alumni phonathons, help plan reunions, collect and submit news for the Navigator class notes, assists the Advancement Office with maintaining current contact information for class, and manage a class Facebook group page and other social media channels. Contact Director of Alumni Relations Rachel Hirsch '13 for more information at (757) 884-9113.
  • Alumni: Volunteer at HRA

    Alumni are encouraged to volunteer for HRA events, in a classroom, coming to speak to students about life and careers after HRA, offering HRA students summer internships, serving as a Trustee of the school (appointed position), presenting awards at the Memorial Awards Assembly, and attending the Senior transition breakfast to help welcome the newest alumni to the group. Contact Director of Alumni Relations Rachel Hirsch '13 for more information at (757) 884-9113.
  • Parent: Annual Fund Parent Division

    Annual Fund parent volunteers raise awareness of the importance of the Annual Fund, make solicitation calls to parents in the fall and/or spring, and thank parent donors. Contact Director of Advancement Jaik Henderson at (757) 884-9135 for more information.
  • Parent: Friends of the Arts

    Friends of the Arts volunteers support the band, chorus, middle and Upper School theater productions, the Murder Mystery Dinner Theater, decorations for seasonal performances, assist with displaying art at exhibits and provide refreshments for Friends of the Arts events.
  • Parent: HRA Parents Association

    The HRA Parents Association encourages all parents to get involved! There are many activities throughout the year that you are able to assist us with. 
  • Parent: International Residential Student Host

    Volunteer host HRA’s international residential students who need a place to call home during the holidays. Contact HRA Chief of Staff and International Administrator Christine Holloway, at (757) 884-9141 for more information.
  • Parent: Navigator Club

    Navigator Club volunteers support the athletic department through concessions stand sales and other events such as the annual Golf Tournament.
  • Parent: Other Volunteer Areas of Support

    Parents are encouraged to volunteer for HRA fundraising events, in a classroom, coming to speak to students about careers, offering HRA students summer internships, and serving as a Trustee  of the school (appointed position).

HRA is accredited through the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, a member of the National Association of Independent Schools and is a National Blue Ribbon School.
