The HRA Difference

A Safe Community

Safety. At Hampton Roads Academy, we are committed to ensuring that our community is safe.  When students feel secure and supported, they can do their best work and be their best selves.

Campus Safety

Hampton Roads Academy’s Crisis Management Department bridges all divisions and areas of the HRA community. Quarterly meetings are held to plan, review, and revise drills and emergency procedures. Working relationships with Newport News Police and Fire Departments, as well as team and faculty training, ensure that we are following best practices. Fire, intruder, and tornado drills are held throughout the year, with consideration being given to the developmental needs of our students.

Guests and visitors to our school must sign in at our receptionist desk and get a Visitor’s pass
before attending to their business.

Classroom doors are locked throughout the day. Our CMD carries radios with them throughout the day, and our campus is wired to allow for rapid communication via our PA system.

Emotional Safety

Safety at HRA is also about trust.

Walk through our halls. You will see students and faculty interacting with one another. The relationships that our faculty and students have with one another highlight the sense of community that we believe makes HRA special. We are fond of telling our students “we are a community and members of a community support one another”.

One layer of support that we offer is through our counselors. We recognize that students benefit from having access during the school day to counselors for support in a range of areas: Academic or social stress, developmental and adjustment issues, and bereavement to name a few.

Solution-focused approaches are utilized to empower students to develop healthy problem-solving and coping skills. For students who require more comprehensive interventions, connections to community resources are facilitated.

Students are encouraged to seek out a counselor if they have a concern about a friend or classmate. Trusting the counselors to support our students is another way that we are a community.

Events for parent are offered throughout the school year and cover a range of topics that allow our parents and counselors to partner, share insights, and deepen our relationships.

Medical Safety

HRA employs a full-time Registered Nurse, who is on campus all day, every day. Our nurse maintains electronic medical records for the student body and prepares and distributes appropriate lists of medical conditions, needs and allergies to faculty and staff as needed.

Faculty and staff are offered annual training in first aid, CPR and AED use. AED devices are installed throughout the campus.

HRA’s full-time Athletic Trainer attends all home sporting events, and athletic coaches maintain CPR certification. HRA athletes complete neuro-cognitive computerized baseline testing each season for all contact sports.
At HRA, creating a safe environment for students to learn and grow is a priority, and here safety comes in various forms.
