HRA Alumni creating a positive impact

Since the last Navigator Magazine, many important subject matters have entered the forefront of people’s minds across the globe. Some of the topics have opened our eyes and have changed the way we live our lives. We’re in tense times that leave so many trying their best to understand what their next best step is in making situations better. In doing that, a few HRA alumni have made it their mission to create strong communities of positivity and goodwill around them to make a difference. This year, we highlight alumni, along with their organizations, that are making a positive impact throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and with the awareness of Black Lives Matter.

Homecoming Tailgate 2019

Homecoming /Alumni Weekend was held last year on October 4-5, 2019. It was a great weekend with alumni activities such as the All-Alumni Tailgate Party, the Homecoming Varsity Soccer game, and the Alumni v. Varsity soccer game. Alumni were also able to take a sneak peek at the new dining hall at the Tailgate Party, which was under construction at the time. The Tailgate party represented 6 decades of alumni and a celebration of Navigator pride for over 60 years!

HRA Golf Classic

The HRA Navigator Club sponsored the 2019 HRA Golf Classic, in memory of Svein Lassen, on Monday, October 21, 2019 at the James River Country Club.

While the weather was a little chilly, it didn’t stop the golfers from enjoying the beautiful golf course. The tournament brought together current HRA parents, HRA alumni, past HRA parents and several businesses who all helped to support and enhance the Academy’s athletic program through their participation. The proceeds from this tournament will go toward the purchase of new HRA coach buses for the athletic teams. A special thank you goes to our Sponsors and Donors who made it possible.

The competition was close, but three teams took the top spots:

First place:
The Cutler Team with Nelson Cutler ‘74, Deck Hankins ‘77, Bob Bailey and Pete Paine ‘77.

Second Place:
The Hankins Team with Hank Hankins ‘92, Shannon Sealy, Kevin Hutchens ’92 and Jeff Morrison.

Third Place:
The TowneBank Team with Carlyle Campbell, Jim Camp, Tom Davis and Rich Stratton.

The Closest to the Pin was Bob Bailey for men and Carey Flannery for women!

The Longest Drive also went to Bob Bailey for men and Dana Kaufman for women!

The Proximity Putting Contest winner was Michael Lincoln with a Hole in One!

Many thanks go to the Navigator Club parent volunteers, especially Tournament Chair and Navigator Club President Kathleen Mauk. The volunteers included Jennifer Borgstrom, Meredith Hutchens, Betsy Jones, Hilary Spencer and Christy Tankersley.
