HRA Graduates 74 in the Class of 2019

Hampton Roads Academy celebrated the accomplishments of 74 students during the 2019 Commencement Ceremony today in the school’s Svein J. Lassen Auditorium. The graduating students continue the tradition of 100 percent college acceptance and earned $6 million in merit scholarships and awards.
The morning ceremony included commencement addresses from Hampton Roads Academy Upper School English teacher Heidi H. Speece, selected by the senior class to give the Salutation, and senior Brandon Kim, selected by his classmates to give the Student Commencement Speech. The Commencement Address was given by HRA alumni Kenneth L. Harkavy, MD, MBA ‘63. After the Conferring of Diplomas, Headmaster Peter W. Mertz gave closing remarks.

“Hampton Roads Academy is extremely proud of this diverse group of graduates,” said Peter W. Mertz, Headmaster. “They are a wonderful mixture of academics, athletes, artists and involved citizens who have already had a tremendously positive effect on our wider Hampton Roads community."

The 74 members of the Class of 2019 leave a legacy of great success at Hampton Roads Academy in the classroom: two seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their high academic achievement; on the stage: the seniors led this year’s play productions and concerts; and on the athletic fields: two graduates will play collegiate athletics on an NCAA team. Graduates plan to attend 43 different colleges or universities.
