ADMISSION

Application Process

We are pleased to welcome you as an applicant to Hampton Roads Academy. We recognize that the application process can be stressful for families anxious to find the right school “fit” for their child(ren). While the process takes only a modest amount of time, following our steps closely and in a timely manner will facilitate the process. If you have questions at any point during the course of application, please call our Office of Admission at 757-884-9148.

In order for the Office of Admission to complete your student’s applicant file and schedule an interview and assessment date, the following items need to be submitted to Hampton Roads Academy:

Step One:
Parents or legal guardians must complete and submit the on-line application. Though not complicated, instructions to guide you through this process are available in a document you may download to the right. There are several steps and sections to the application: receiving the checklist, inputting student, parent and grandparent information, current school and coursework information (if applicable), parent or student statements depending on grade-level, and downloading and sending the teacher recommendation(s) forms to current teachers. During the submission of the on-line application, there will be a non-refundable Application Fee of $75.00 assessed. Please click the “Apply Now” button on the right to begin this process.

Step Two:
Parents must print, sign and date the Student Record Release Form and deliver, either by mail or in person, to the principal’s/head’s office of the student's current school. Request that the school forward official copies of the listed documents directly to the HRA Office of Admission as soon as possible.

Step Three:
Each applicant is required to take the HRA admission assessment test appropriate for his/her grade-level. HRA administers standardized assessments in reading comprehension and math, and evaluates a writing sample (Grades 1-12). Likewise, readiness assessments are administered for grades JK & K. Assessment dates are provided throughout the year preceding the entrance request; please check the Admission Calendar for assessment dates. Seat reservations are required.

Step Four:
Candidates for admission for grades 3 and up shall spend a portion of a school day at HRA*. Candidates will be paired with a student ambassador and will participate in daily activities. Also during this visit, the candidate will be interviewed by a school administrator.
*Ideally, the Candidate can visit classes and interview on the same date as his/her appointment for testing, therefore reducing the amount of time spent out of the current school.

No student can be considered for admission to Hampton Roads Academy until all of the above steps are completed.

Early Decision

Early Decision Admission is offered for grades 5 through 11, October 1 – November 30. The application steps for the early admission process must be completed by November 30, and notifications will be mailed the following week. An offer of early admission guarantees a place for the student in the upcoming grade and will require a non-refundable deposit, due by January 15, to hold the seat. All students who enroll by the January 15 commitment date will be awarded “frozen” tuition for the first year. Decide early and forgo this year’s tuition adjustment!

Rolling Admission

January 1 marks the beginning of rolling admission, Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten Assessments also begin in January. All other applications, for remaining seats in JK, K, and Grades 1 through 11, are considered on a rolling basis until classes are filled. Please contact the Office of Admission, (757) 884-9148 or admissions@hra.org, with questions about available seats in your child’s class.

Final Steps to Enrollment

Placement: Admitted students may be asked to take placement tests in mathematics and/or Language. These students will be notified of testing dates, if applicable.

Final Transcripts: Hampton Roads Academy will request official transcripts from the student’s previous school before the start of school.

Immunization and Physical Examination Records: HRA uses the Magnus online health records system and will provide the appropriate links to record that there is documented proof of every student having received the doses of diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, and chickenpox vaccines required by the Commonwealth of Virginia. These forms must be uploaded and submitted to the school nurse before enrollment in Hampton Roads Academy and/or HRA athletic participation.

Birth Certificate: Students in grades JK-4 must also present a copy of their birth certificate.
